Drag Becomes Her – HOME, Manchester

As a drag parody of the cult movie, Death Becomes Her, Peaches Christ’s show, Drag Becomes Her turns the bitter rivalry between ageing Hollywood actresses, Meryl Streep and Goldie Horn into one between two leading drag queens. As they both take a potion that makes them live forever, hilarity ensues.

Veteran winner of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, Jinkx Monsoon and All Stars favourite, BenDeLaCreme are the headline stars, who draw an enthusiastic audience. The show is almost sold out, and the energy is electric as two of drag’s most iconic queens take to the stage in Manchester. A city with a proud LGBT community, it is clear to see the devotion of their fans, as each get roaring cheers when they arrive on stage.

This is a show that relies heavily on being familiar with the drag scene. As bitchy insults are exchanged between the two rivals, there are repeated references to Ru Paul’s Drag Race and in-jokes about Manchester’s drag culture, which get a strong reaction from the audience. Local queen Donna Trump is given a prominent role in the production and is a resounding success with the Mancunian crowd.

I have to admit that a lot of the jokes were lost on me, having never seen an episode of Ru Paul’s TV shows, but I want to stress that I am not the target audience for this show. Lines like “It’s the best thing to happen to Manchester drag since Alexis Stone got a new face” mean nothing to me, but had the target audience in uproar. Drag Becomes Her is still an incredibly entertaining show, with plenty of laughs to be had from the brilliant physical comedy, hilarious missed cues, and inventive ad-libbing. Far from perfect, the mistakes are just as funny as the rehearsed comedy.

The true highlight, as with any drag show, is the fantastic musical numbers, complete with flamboyant dance choreography. BenDeLaCreme superbly adapts iconic songs, like Kylie Minogue’s I Can’t Get You Out of My Head and Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do, to create new songs packed with amusing, witty lyrics.

With Drag Becomes Her, Peaches Christ has created an instant classic, hugely popular with its audience. She even made a delightful appearance in the show as Isabella Von Ramen Noodles.

The show is a blast! Adding a much needed sprinkle of glitter to a rainy Mancunian evening, it is funny, entertaining and provides a great night out.
